Ethical Investment Policy In keeping with its mission, The Salvation Army seeks to ensure that its funds are invested to reflect its ethical and moral stance. A Code of Ethical Practice, which has both defensive and pro-active characteristics has therefore been developed.
Investment is excluded in companies which derive a material proportion of their revenues from the following activities:
The production of alcohol
The production of tobacco
The manufacture of weapons, weapon platforms and weapon systems
The promotion of gambling
The production and distribution of pornography
Companies deriving a substantial proportion of their revenues from the distribution of alcohol or tobacco will also be excluded.
This investment screen will apply to directly held investments in the UK and overseas and will be provided to investment managers.
Investment managers appointed by The Salvation Army are required to monitor portfolio companies to ensure adherence to best practice in corporate governance, employment conditions and environmental sustainability. The investment managers of the funds of The Salvation Army are also encouraged to engage with companies, and, where appropriate, to challenge them in pursuance of these objectives. Investment managers must provide reports to the committee on their activities.
